Who are Cyclewise
Having started Cyclewise over 12 years ago, Rich and Craig have gone on to make Cyclewise the UK’s leading MTB Coaching and Leadership experts. With an enviable list of prestigious clients that include British Cycling, PGL, The Lake District National Park Authority, The Forestry Commission and both the UK National Mountain Centres, they have, in their own way, helped to create and manage a cycling revolution.
Both Rich and Craig have also written numerous articles for various MTB magazines, made several media appearances, including being featured on Countryfile, and given several radio interviews all highlighting the sport of mountain biking and their passion for it.
The revolution officially started in 2004 with the delivery of the very first SMBLA course at Whinlatter, Keswick. They had previously worked together at Center Parcs from 1997 where they managed the outdoor activities centre and Europe’s largest cycle fleet of 4,500 bikes with a staff of 45 Cytech-qualified bike mechanics.
Having both worked full time in Outdoor Education Centres between 2000 and 2004, they qualified as SMBLA Leaders in 2002, underwent the Tutor training process and by 2004 were able to deliver SMBLA (Mountain Bike Leader Award) courses. Together they have trained over 4,500 MTB leaders, helped to write new chapters on MTB skills for the Scottish Cycling handbook as well as create the MTB skills boards that are still seen to this day at all of the 7 Stanes network.
Cyclewise gained its permanent base at Whinlatter in 2008 when we opened our first shop at the trailhead of the famous Altura Trail. Having assisted with the design, it gave both Rich and Craig immense pride to witness Whinlatter being voted the best trail centre in England and has helped Cyclewise play its part in the huge uptake and revolution of biking in the UK.
Now six years on, the award-winning shop (voted best visitor attraction by Cumbria Tourism 2012) continues to grow from strength to strength.
Since 2010, Craig and Rich have been the technical advisors to British Cycling where they have helped to create both the MTB Coaching scheme and more recently the new MTB Leadership programme. As the first BC Leadership Tutors in the UK, they have delivered training to many world-class cyclists all over Europe.
In 2013, Cyclewise became the first organisation to be recognised as a British Cycling approved centre in the UK which is a huge achievement and is down to Rich and Craig’s determination to raise the standards in MTB qualifications, ensuring that today’s leaders have the necessary skills and knowledge to lead with confidence using the correct techniques and leadership models.
Rich and Craig were also instrumental in the development of the ‘Cyclewise Academy’ which over the past three years has seen 120 children get involved and now has a 15+ strong volunteer committee (all qualified by Cyclewise) that will ensure that local children can make the most of all the biking opportunities presented to them.
With a combined 40 years in the cycling industry, both Craig and Rich act as Technical Advisors to many local authorities, leading outdoor organisations and are often required to act as independent experts in legal cases.
So after a fantastic and rewarding 10 years with a brilliant team of 19 highly qualified coaches, instructors, mechanics and the most enthusiastic and knowledgeable staff in the industry, we look forward to another 10 years+ helping to lead the way.
