Cyclewise Academy

We can be found on Facebook at:

Cyclewise Academy was the first club to gain British Cycling ‘Clubmark’ accreditation in the North of England.

The aim of the Cyclewise Academy is really quite simple:

  1. To provide opportunities for young bikers to enjoy fun, safe and exciting mountain biking in one of the world's best places to bike... the Lake District.
  2. To provide a progressive structure of coaching/sessions to enable the riders to improve their technique/understanding of the sport and get more enjoyment from their riding.
  3. If applicable, help identify the future champions of the sport and assist in realising their potential sport and assist in realising their potential.
  4. Enable young riders to meet other like-minded young riders.

We have been fortunate enough to engage Cyclewise instructors during most of our sessions - they have delivered some fantastic coaching and skills training to all our groups throughout the year.

Our Cyclewise Academy leaders are proficient in providing and delivering a variety of led rides, incorporating sessions on navigation, leadership, first aid, mechanics and maintenance, hydration, nutrition, racing and kit required. This fantastic environment sets the skills associated with the sport of mountain biking and above all makes our sport SAFE and FUN!

Building on our past experiences, we are developing a programme of Academy sessions, with a structured and logical approach. This will see strategically planned away days to practice and embed the learning in different environments. We hope to have 6 ‘away ‘ sessions and 6 sessions at Whinlatter.

On a Whinlatter-based day, Academy members meet at the Academy clubhouse behind the Cyclewise Whinlatter shop. The summertime programme runs from 10am - 3pm and wintertime from 10am - 1pm. Times may change according to the location, weather etc but members will be advised of this via our Facebook group.

The Academy is managed by a team of dedicated volunteer leaders, many of whom have their own kids in the club. We have fully qualified Level 2 British Cycling Leaders .

As a voluntary run organisation we are always on the lookout for extra helping hands to aid, develop and expand the Academy.

If you enjoy the participation and bikiing, we can recommend the British Cycling Leader training programme – click here to find out more.

Our membership is open to girls and boys aged 8 to 18. The current fee is £30 for one year of membership .

This is an annual fee paid by bank transfer in September each year.

We have a dedicated core of super-dynamic committee members all with the main aim of "Making it Happen" for our young bikers. We meet once a month for some behind-the-scenes organisation, ensuring we continue to provide as many opportunities as possible to ensure a good-quality experience for all. The club would simply not exist without these dedicated people.
